First, let me say that I prefer glass water bottles. However, in some circumstances, I need to use a plastic bottle. After much, much research for a genuinely decent plastic bottle that is also made in the USA, I found the Hydrapak Purebot. To do real justice to this bottle -- and to show why the Purebot is no ordinary bottle -- I'm compelled to preface my review with a few facts on plastic water bottles, in general.

While many plastic bottles claim to be free of the better-known endocrine disruptors -- BPA and phthalates, which include DEHA and DEHP -- there are actually hundreds of endocrine disrupting, estrogenic-active (EA) chemicals used in plastic manufacturing. We just haven't heard much about them yet. Fact is, you want to avoid all of these EA chemicals -- not just BPA and phthalates. This is because EA chemicals tend to accumulate in the body with repeated exposures, and because they may also be associated with health issues ranging from from birth defects, low birth weight, diabetes, obesity, genetic damage and learning disorders, to male sterility and reproductive cancers. To date, only one water bottle company, Hydrapak, has taken a pioneering role in addressing this concern and made a plastic water bottle certified to be EA-free. That means it's not only free of BPA and phthalates, but is free of all endocrine disrupting chemicals.

NOW FOR MY REVIEW: This bottle is in a class all its own. Aside from being certified EA-free, the PureBot is dishwasher safe, reasonably priced and one of only a few water bottles that is actually 100% USA-made. After four months of use, I can also attest that it is durable, leak-proof and lightweight, with no off-taste from the plastic. I like the pull-up sports top, which means it's simple to get a drink of water -- no unscrewing of lids, no sucking like a hamster, no ingenious contraptions to fall apart. (I could wish for an attached dirt/germ cover of some sort, but I'm not complaining). I also like the wide-mouth lid, which makes it easy to fill with ice cubes. While I have no intention of recycling this bottle any time soon, it's good to know that it's made of #4 plastic, which (unlike the #7 plastics) is genuinely recyclable in all municipalities. I can't think of a single drawback to this bottle, except that it's only available in only a few select fitness/athletic stores, which means that most of us will have to buy it online.
